G protein-coupled receptors in the new world

Abstract
Seven-transmembrane receptors, traditionally called G protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs), comprise natureʼs largest and most versatile family of signal-transducing receptors. GPCRs control essentially every physiological process and represent an enormously important class of therapeutic targets. These facts have motivated intense interest in GPCR research for many years. Recent progress has literally transformed the field, taking GPCR research into a fundamentallyʻnew worldʼ. I am honored to briefly highlight a few aspects of this new world, focusing on those which I find particularly exciting.
