Abstract
It has ever been very difficult to treat chronic pain, such as fibromyalgia(FM)and spondyloarthritis(SpA). Various agents affecting neuronal activities, including antidepressants and antiepileptic drugs, are used to relieve the clinical condition. However, these pharmacologic therapies are hardly adequate for almost patients. Topiramate is an antiepileptic drug newly approved for the treatment of partial seizures in Japan. Recently, topiramate was found to be effective for several chronic neuralgic symptoms, including intercostal neuralgia, trigeminal neuralgia. We report two cases of chronic pain that was successfully treated with topiramate. Case 1 was a patient suffering with FM. Case 2 was a patient suffering with SpA. Therefore topiramate can represent a new therapeutic option for chronic pain.
