Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to assess the immunostimulatory effect of the cell wall derived from Saccharomyces pastorianus SP-1 in office workers presenting with fatigue and low score on Scoring of Immunological Vigor(SIV)which is the comprehensive assessment of human immunity. Methods A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial was conducted for 8 weeks. Participants(40-59 years of age)were divided to two groups, SP-1 group(SP-1:1500 mg╱day, n=62)and placebo group(dextrin:1500 mg╱day, n=63). At weeks 0, 4, and 8, self-rated state of moods evaluation by the compact Profile of Mood States 2(POMS2)questionnaire were performed, and blood samples were collected to analyze types of leukocyte, lymphocyte subsets and SIV. Results Fatigue-Inertia score on POMS2 significantly decreased in both groups during the study period, however, no significant difference was detected between the groups. SIV score in SP-1 group was significantly higher than in placebo group at weeks 4 and 8. In the stratified analysis on initial SIV score(less than or equal to 16), not only the SIV score, but also the number of naive T cells and the ratio of naïve T cell to memory T cell were significantly higher in SP-1 group than in placebo group at weeks 4 and 8. No adverse events attributed to the SP-1 ingestion were observed in the study. Conclusions These results suggest that the 1500 mg SP-1 ingestion improves the immunological status, especially the number of naive T cells and the ratio of naïve T cell to memory T cell(.
