Abstract
Objectives A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study was conducted to evaluate the effects of food containing Terminalia bellirica extract on visceral fat. Methods Healthy subjects(23≤ body mass index(BMI)<30)were selected for inclusion in the study; In case of subjects with BMI ≥25, only those with visceral fat area <100 cm2 were selected. One hundred volunteer subjects were enrolled and randomly assigned to two groups. The subjects consumed either test food containing T. bellirica extract(41.6 mg╱day as gallic acid)or placebo food, before meals for 12 weeks. Visceral fat area(primary outcome), subcutaneous fat area, total fat area, body weight, BMI, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist circumference╱hip circumference(secondary outcomes)were evaluated. Results Compared to the placebo food group, the test food group showed significant reduction in visceral fat area, body weight, and BMI(P<0.05). During the study period, no adverse events attributable to the test foods were observed. Conclusions Overall, the findings indicate that the foods containing T. bellirica extract lead to a reduction in visceral fat in healthy subjects(. UMIN-CTR ID:UMIN000030731)
