Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of foods containing Brazilian green propolis extract, pumpkin seed extract and cranberry extract(BPC)on nocturia and other urinary storage symptoms. Method An open-label study conducted on 26 healthy Japanese women who are aware of frequent urination. Subjects were administered oral BPC daily for 8 weeks. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of storage symptoms, subjects recorded a bladder diary and responded to questionnaires(Overactive Bladder Symptom Score(OABSS), Nocturia-Quality of Life(N-QOL), Kings Health Questionnaire(KHQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index-Japanese version (PSQI-J)). Results As a result, the number of nocturnal, diurnal, 24-hour urination and incontinence of urine were significantly reduced compared to before BPC administration. The average urine volume at night increased significantly, and the time from sleep onset to the first morning void was significantly longer. The overall OABSS score, the total and subscales score of N-QOL and the eight KHQ domain scores improved significantly. There were significant improvements in the total and 6 subscales score of PSQI-J. Furthermore, no side effects of BPC intake were identified during the study. Conclusion These results suggest that BPC is effective and safe, improving subjective nocturia, storage symptoms-related to QOL and sleep quality. It is believed that this mechanism is mainly due to the increase in the average urine volume at night, which is an increase in the capacity of the bladder. (UMIN-CTR: UMIN000042611)
