Abstract
Objectives The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the oral training program “The Exercise of Mouth”on oral function. Methods A total of 64 elderly subjects were divided into 27 intervention group and 35 control group. The intervention group received the oral training three times a day for four weeks, while the control group received no intervention. Participants were measured for eight types of oral functions before and after the intervention. Results After the 4-week intervention, the intervention group showed significant improvement in chewing ability using a colour-changeable chewing gum and subjective chewing ability using the food intake questionnaire. Significant improvement in maximum tongue pressure was also observed. Conclusions The results suggest that implementation of a 4-week oral training program improves oral functions including masticatory ability and tongue motor function in elderly people.
