Abstract
Burst fractures of the vertebral body are unstable fractures and often require surgical treatment. In our institute, pedicle screw fixation via intermuscular approach is used with double C arm technique and Jackson table. In this manuscript, we show the tips of the methods and results of screw insertion. Two hundred and eighteen pedicle screws(42 cases) from October 2010 to December 2011 were retrospectively evaluated about the mal-insertion and shift of screws. Additionally, a representative case was demonstrated. Double C arm technique enables us to insert adequate sizes of pedicle screws from the outside, which have strong pullout strength. In this series, all screws were correctly inserted via pedicle. The maximal shift of the screws was 2 mm with no damages of neural tissue and vasculature. Pedicle screw fixation via intermuscular approach using double C arm technique and Jackson table might be a useful therapeutic option for burst fractures of vertebral body in thoracolumbar spine. We should accumulate the cases and continue thorough follow-up to evaluate instrument failure, subsequent fracture after removal of screws and limitation of the motion range in the long term, although the results in the short term are acceptable.
