肺動脈性肺高血圧症に対する３系統の薬物（ホスホジエステラーゼ５阻害薬，プロスタサイクリン，エンドセリン受容体拮抗薬）は，肺動脈平滑筋細胞に作用して血管を拡張させる．さらにその増殖を抑制して肺高血圧を改善する．高用量のプロスタサイクリンはアポトーシス誘導作用も有する．
