Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the intake of the supplement consistedof Chlorella Vulgaris, bifidobacteria, oligosaccharide, and plant fiber could alleviate thefemale students’ disorder of gastrointestinal QOL or not. We chose the female students whocomplained their abnormal conditions in the gastrointestinal system as target subjects, andthen implemented the double−blind, placebo controlled, parallel−group comparative study bygiving 20 granulates(one granulate contains 200 mg)of the supplement per day for 28 dayscontinuously. Among total 48 subjects, we assigned 24 subjects to the supplement group andthe remaining 24 to the placebo group. The influence of the supplement was accessed afterand before the intake of it using the questionnaire, Japanese version of GSRS(gastrointestinalsymptom rating scale). As a result of that, the subscale scores(constipation scores)whichcalculated from the GSRS in the supplement group significantly decreased from 2.76±1.56 to1.86±1.23 (p<0.01). Also, the overall scores in the supplement group significantlydecreased from 2.24±0.95 to 1.84±0.83(p<0.05). In the supplement group compared to theplacebo group, there was some alleviation effect on the influence to the daily life caused bythe symptoms of gastrointestinal system such as constipation etc. As mentioned above, theintake of the supplement was considered as one of the effective and simple treatment methodsto improve the QOL of the person who have a gastrointestinal symptom.(Jpn Pharmacol Ther 2008;36:1051−9)KEY WORDS Supplement, Gastrointestinal QOL, Female student, Japanese version of GSRS
