Abstract
Sodium chondroitin sulfate has been recognized as a safe and effective medicine or dietarysupplement for the treatment of symptoms of osteoarthritis. In this study, we examinedthe effect of feeding of sodium chondroitin sulfate on UV damage in hairless mice. UV irradiationsignificantly reduced the water content of the stratum corneum in hairless mice. Feedingof sodium chondroitin sulfate significantly recovered the reduction of the water content of thestratum corneum. The present study suggested that the administration of sodium chondroitinsulfate alleviated the UV damage of human skin.（Jpn Pharmacol Ther 2009；37：393−7）KEY WORDS Sodium chondroitin sulfate, UV damage, Skin
