Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to clarify whether long-term ingestion of fermented milk containing SC-2 lactic acid bacteria, collagen hydrolysates, and sphingomyelin increase skin hydration in healthy human participants with dry skin. Methods A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was carried out for 94 women. Subjects ingested the active drink(fermented milk containing SC-2 lactic acid bacteria, collagen hydrolysates, and sphingomyelin)or the placebo drink(acidified skim milk)for 28 days. Skin hydration on the forearm and the cheek was analyzed before and after the ingestion of test drink. Results The change of skin hydration on the forearm was significantly increased in the group fed active drink as compared with the group fed placebo drink. Conclusions These results suggested that long-term ingestion of fermented milk containing SC-2 lactic acid bacteria, collagen hydrolysates, and sphingomyelin increased skin hydration.
