Abstract
Objectives We evaluated the effects of single ingestion of a hotrienol-containing tablet on the autonomic nervous system activity and central nervous function. Methods We conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, parallel-group study with 30 healthy female adults divided into two groups. The subjects orally ingested a tablet containing 0.03 mg of hotrienol, or a placebo. The autonomic nervous activity was evaluated based on the miosis rate and peripheral skin temperature. In addition, the central nervous function was evaluated based on the postural sway in a standing position. Results Single ingestion of the hotrienol-containing tablet significantly increased the miosis rate compared to the placebo. Moreover, in the subjects having a high MMS baseline(depression╱anxiety), hotrienol ingestion significantly increased peripheral skin temperature compared to the placebo. In the subjects having a high SCL30-score baseline, the ingestion of hotrienol showed significantly lower total sway path length than the placebo. There were no statistically significant differences across the two groups in the MMS scores. Conclusions Our results support the conclusion that single ingestion of a hotrienol-containing tablet could be an effective way of alleviating certain stress and anxiety by stabilizing autonomic nervous system activity and improving central nervous function.
