Abstract
Objective We evaluated the effects of glycerol ingestion on body water retention in healthy adults. Methods A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover comparison study was conducted in healthy subjects. After consumption of 20 g of glycerol-containing or placebo beverage, body weight, body water, urine output, and frequency of urination were measured up to 3 hr after consumption. Sensation of thirst was also assessed by the visual analogue scale (VAS)scores. Results In the analysis of twenty-eight subjects, body weight and body water loss were reduced by glycerol ingestion. Glycerol intake also significantly suppressed the increase in urine volume and frequency of urination up to 3 hr after ingestion of the test food. In addition, the VAS score for thirst was also significantly lower 3 hr after glycerol ingestion. Conclusions In healthy adults, 20 g glycerol significantly reduced body weight and body water loss compared to placebo, suggesting that glycerol is effective in retaining body water.
