Abstract
In clinical trials of pharmaceuticals, it has been recognized that, when the effect is small or the placebo effect is large, it is difficult to obtain a statistical difference from placebo control, and a different control group is to be used in such cases. Although functional foods are such an example, almost all products are tested using a placebo control resulting in a difficulty in obtaining a statistical difference. Scientifically acceptable control groups other than placebo should be considered in the clinical trials for food function. (Jpn Pharmacol Ther 2022;50:2267‒70)
