Abstract
Objectives A randomized, double–blind, placebo–controlled, parallel–group study was conducted to evaluate the effects of food containing young barley leaf powder(YBLP)on the production of salivary secretory immunoglobulin A(sIgA)and physical conditions of healthy subjects. Methods Sixty healthy subjects were enrolled in this study and randomly divided into two groups which received either food containing YBLP or a placebo for eight weeks. The primary outcomes of the trial were the measurement of the concentration and the secretion rate of the salivary sIgA, and the secondary outcomes were the physical conditions during the intake period based on a questionnaire survey. Results The YBLP group showed a significant increase in the concentration and the secretion rate of salivary sIgA(P<0.05)as compared with the placebo group. On the other hand, there were no significantly differences in symptoms of physical condition between the YBLP group and the placebo group. During the study period, no adverse events attributable to the test foods were observed in both the YBLP group and the placebo group. Conclusions Collectively, these findings suggest that YBLP promotes the production of salivary sIgA through the regulation of immune system in healthy subjects.(UMIN–CTR ID: UMIN000042653)(Jpn Pharmacol Ther 2023;51:1289‒96)
