Abstract
Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of pentadecy(l pentadecanoic acid lipids)–containing Aurantiochytrium oil(PAO)on postprandial and fasting blood glucose levels in healthy Japanese male and female adults. Methods The study design was a randomized, double–blind, placebo–controlled, parallel–group trial. Fifty subjects were randomly assigned to two groups to consume either a test food containing PAO(6 mg pentadecyl)or placebo food twice a day, after breakfast and dinner, for 12 weeks. On each examination day, subjects ingested 75 g of glucose solution and their blood glucose levels were measured before the ingestion, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes after the ingestion. The primary outcome measure was the incremental area under the curve(IAUC)of postprandial blood glucose(PG)at 12 weeks after the intervention. Results The efficacy analysis dataset was a per protocol set, and 23 subjects per group(totally 46 subjects)were included in the analysis. The primary outcome, IAUC of PG, was significantly lowered in the PAO group compared to the placebo group(P=0.049). There was no significant difference in fasting blood glucose levels between groups. During the study, no adverse events that were attributed to the consumption of test food were observed. Conclusion These results demonstrated that the 12–week consumption of food containing PAO suppressed the rise in postprandial blood glucose levels.(Jpn Pharmacol Ther 2023;51:1311‒28)
