Abstract
Objective The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of auraptene on core body temperature, serum osmolarity and thermal sensation under hot and humid environment. Methods A randomized, double–blind, placebo–controlled crossover comparison study was conducted in 15 healthy subjects. Before load testing, they took test food containing auraptene (10 mg/day)or placebo for 5 days. The subjects exercised on a stationary bike for 30 minutes in temperature–controlled room(28±1℃, humidity 60±10%). Alternations of core body temperature, serum osmolarity and plasma volume were measured before and after exercise. In addition, the thermal sensation and thirstiness were assessed by the visual analogue scale (VAS)scores. Results In analysis of the evaluable 15 subjects, ingestion of test food containing auraptene significantly decrease the serum osmolarity and increase the plasma volume after exercise compared to placebo group. The VAS analysis indicated a significant improvement of thermal sensation after exercise by auraptene intake. In addition, core body temperature in subjects with higher BMI or LDL–cholesterol were significantly decreased after exercise by ingestion of test food containing auraptene. No serious adverse events were observed during the study period. Conclusions The findings indicated the food containing auraptene mitigated the risk of dehydration and thermal sensation in hot and humid condition.
