Abstract
Objective This study aimed to verify the effects of ethyl α–D–glucoside(α–EG)on various measures of skin quality including elasticity in healthy Japanese adults. Methods This was a randomized, double–blind, placebo–controlled, parallel–group comparative study. Participants were randomly assigned, via computer, to one of two groups. Both groups were instructed to drink one bottle of study beverage every morning after waking for eight weeks. Participants in the α–EG group were given a study beverage that contained α–EG; the placebo group received a similar beverage formulated without α–EG. The evaluation parameters included skin viscoelasticity(cheek and back of the hand; Cutometer® dual MPA 580), skin moisture(cheek; Corneometer® CM 825), transepidermal water loss(cheek; Tewameter® TM300), and dermal layer imaging assessments(cheek; DermaLab®). The primary outcome was skin viscoelasticity after eight weeks. Results Eighty–six individuals provided informed consent; 56 met the inclusion criteria and were randomized to either the α–EG(n=28)or placebo group(n=28). The analysis dataset was per protocol set and included 26 participants in each group; four participants(two from each group)were excluded for non–compliance. Among skin elasticity indicators, the gross elasticity(R2), the portion of elasticity compared to complete curve(R7), and the ability of the skin to return to normal state(R8)in the back of the hand was significantly improved in the α–EG group compared to the placebo group; no adverse events were observed. Conclusions These results suggest that consuming α–EG containing beverage daily may improve skin elasticity.
