Abstract
Objective This study is aimed to compare the effect of the oral rehydration solution Smooth Ion(test drink)and that of mineral water(control)on absorption rate and excretion efficiency of the body water and electrolytes in male adults. Methods This study was conducted using crossover design. 20 healthy male participants received 3 consecutive 10–minute dry sauna baths(90 degrees Celsius)with 10–minute breaks in between. The participants were instructed to ingest the test drink or control in the same amount as water lost during the sauna bathing. Body weight, body weight change, rate of body weight change, serum and urinary electrolytes concentrations, hematological parameters, and blood chemistry values were assessed before and after sauna bathing and up to 4 hours after the ingestion of the test drink or control. Results After the sauna bathing followed by intake of the test drink or control, test drink intake group absorbed water and electrolytes more quickly comparing to control intake group. Moreover, body weights and blood electrolytes were retained significantly better until the end of the study period, in accordance with the lower urinary excretion. No adverse events associated to the test drink have been observed during the study period. Conclusion Efficacy for the water and electrolytes supplementation of oral rehydration solution Smooth Ion has been confirmed in healthy adults with sauna–induced heatstroke.
